As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week it’s great to share a short interview with Jess Moran our Payroll & Benefits Apprentice. Jess will soon be completing her Level 3 Payroll Administrator Apprenticeship and has worked hard to learn the role alongside this. She is a dedicated member of the payroll team and we are extremely proud of her!

Jess’ story!

How did you find out about the apprenticeship?

I found out about the apprenticeship via indeed, I was scrolling through the page looking for jobs around the area and found the apprenticeship and thought it was something different for me to do and applied for it.

Why did you want to do an apprenticeship?

I decided I wanted to do something to challenge myself and take my self out of my comfort zone. I’ve never done anything about payroll, so it was something to challenge myself with. I wanted to learn something new try something different which I have never done before.

What are your day to day role & job responsibilities?

My day-to-day role and responsibilities include printing out information for payroll processing, processing payrolls for 4 different sites, checking payrolls to make sure any errors are spotted and correct before processing. After payroll is committed, I would then complete all tasks which include sending reports for overtime and completing payroll admin tasks. The responsibilities also include responding to any queries which employees may have about their pay and correcting any errors made.

Has the apprenticeship helped you decide which type of role you would like to pursue in the future?

The apprenticeship has helped me to decide that I would like to pursue a career in payroll. This is something which I haven’t done before and it is new to me, but the learning which I have done over the past 2 years has made me feel confident and I am able to grow my skills and knowledge I currently must develop them further if possible.

What skills have you learned so far?

I have learnt a lot of different skills so far from how to process payrolls, what errors to look out for and what might occur. I have learnt the administration process and the different systems used in payroll and how they work. I’ve learnt skills of how to work out manual calculations for tax and national insurance and any other deductions which need to be taken off people’s pay.

I have covered different legislations which has helped me grow the skills for processing payroll and to be able to do it well.

What do you enjoy about working at px Group?

I enjoy working with the team at px, I get to learn new things each day and every day is different and there is always something new which I am learning about and able to take this away with my and develop my knowledge further.

How do you see your future at px Group?

I hope to see my future at Px as a qualified Payroll Administrator once I have passed my qualifications in my upcoming end point assessment.

What advice would you give to others considering an apprenticeship?

The advice I would give to other considering an apprenticeship is to challenge yourself, if you feel like you would like to develop new skills or learn something new then an apprenticeship is for you. You’re able to learn and work at the same time which will help along the way to those who want to challenge themselves and develop their skills and knowledge in the right apprenticeship for them.
