Middlesbrough College had identified, through consultation with local employers, that potential recruits in the local workforce lacked the practical skills needed to make them work ready.
Local employers were also concerned with the lack of vocational pathways, and were keen to have a greater influence over course content. px group was awarded the project in collaboration with Original Equiment Manufacturers (OEMs) over training requirements.
The requirements of local and regional industry, together with the ambition of Middlesbrough College to create a worldclass facility, shaped the requirements of the STEM centre facility.
Our team designed, engineered and project managed the construction of the centre, which is now a live industrial plant for distillation and three phase separation. It incorporates platforms at various heights, provides columns and vessels that are interconnected by Kennedy grating, ladders and stairs.
Equipment within the centre includes: Fully functional three phase separator (oil, water and gas), Distillation column (methanol and water), pipes, valves, pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, in-line mixers, blower and a variety of level, temperature, flow, pressure, pH Control and SIL rated instrumentation, Emerson DeltaV control system, 6 metre vessel for confined space training, steel structure lifting, rigging, moving loads and steel erecting.
