px has significant experience and expertise in the optimisation of CCGT and CHP schemes and this has led to the formation of px solutions. px solutions brings together expertise from various disciplines within px to provide high quality technical assistance in relation to the design and performance of energy assets.
In today’s environmentally conscious world, a recurrent focus of px solutions is to achieve and maintain high operating efficiencies and deliver the business integrity and commercial advantages that follow.
In terms of conceptual design, px is currently developing a 1020 MW CHP scheme on Teesside, UK (Thor Cogeneration Ltd) and has utilised its extensive operational and OEM experience to ensure that this CHP scheme is ‘best in class’. This project is greenfield and consideration has been given to all areas of design including general site, gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, cooling systems, export capacities and site services in order to meet the project requirements. In particular, px has considered areas such as:
Liaison with OEMs for best fits Operating flexibility i.e. baseload, part-load, two shifting, peaking HRSG selection – conventional versus once through Cooling tower - wet versus dry Fuel flexibility e.g. fuel spiking Integration of customers steam requirements Reliability and availability Redundancy for maintaining steam supplies Operating efficiencies Environmental requirements Compliance with Grid Operator requirements
These considerations culminated in the development of functional and technical specifications for the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project.
Adopting a similar approach, px has advised other major energy companies on similar types of plant for projects both in the UK and Europe.
